Everett Koop, M.D., announced what many had known for centuries: that the causes of illness, including the big killers, could be effectively treated using natural approaches such as nutrition and fitness. TIPS FROM THE PROS

FOOD AS MEDICINE
Illnesses can be reversed through whole foods, good hydration, exercise, relaxation and other natural healing approaches. Your genes are not your destiny! Even Type 1 Diabetes can be reversed if caught before the pancreas totally shuts down. What you put into your body is of utmost importance! It affects every system, your brain and blood chemistry, your mood and your energy level. Americans average 150 lbs of sugar per year including all that corn syrup in most packaged foods. Sugar destroys your energy and your immune system. It is no wonder the number one complaint in doctor's offices is low energy and that immune related diseases are on the rise!

The truth is you can improve your energy level and your immune system in one day just by changing your food. Here are a few simple changes that you will benefit from: poach or hard boil your eggs so the yolks are not broken; avoid powdered or separated eggs completely; eat organic to get 2-4 times the nutrition and none of the pesticides/herbicides/fungicides that act like estrogen in your body and also reduce antioxidants; put the shiny side of foil against your food; avoid charred meat; use the crockpot to preserve vitamins; if you microwave use glass containers to avoid the xenoestrogens in plastics; please stop feeding your children the daily average of 1-3,000 chemicals in processed foods! Human bodies were not designed to handle them well. .

SENSIBLE SUPPLEMENTATION
There are some truly great products available but you can get frustrated trying to figure out which ones are right for you. If you are new to supplementation, go for the basics and start adding healthy nutrition and a simple supplement program to your daily routine. This alone will improve your energy. If you have already achieved that, you can focus on specific goals like weight loss, muscle gain or symptom removal. The order in which your body best utilizes supplements is liquids (if they are ionic or smaller, not just colloidal), powders, capsules and last, tablets. However, the tablets I carry are either binder-free or have few binders, therefore, are easily digested. I have elected to follow a Whole-Food based program with many liquids and powders so you receive all the co-factors naturally present and don't have to open too many bottles or take too many pills to have your needs met.

WATER
You need .5 oz of water for every pound of weight: a 120 lb person needs 60 oz, taken throughout the day. It will suppress appetite, help the body metabolize stored fat, reduce fluid retention, maintain muscle tone, rid the body of waste and help stop any detox reaction due to cleansing too fast! Need any more reasons to refill that water bottle?

DETOXIFICATION
It's a good thing and it's ongoing! Your body knows how to release waste via the bowels, lungs, skin, and when it has enough water and pure nutrients it will accomplish this life-saving task more thoroughly and easily. However, to avoid detoxing too fast which can bring on headaches and bowel trouble, start with only 50% of the dosage recommended on the bottles and take two weeks to gradually reach full dosage.

Myths vs. Facts

MYTH: Herbs are unscientific, primitive and ineffective.

FACT: Herbs are plants. All plants have nutritional and medicinal properties and hundreds of prescription drugs have been developed from plants- with a change of a few molecules, making the drug a man-made synthetic, patentable substance. Your food and nutritional supplement programs are more powerful if they come from plants (rather than being synthetically produced) due to the presence of all the co-factors. These co-factors work synergistically and are what make the food powerful. Their absence in prescription drugs helps produce unwanted side effects. Can herbs interact with drugs? Yes, and the book to read on this subject is Prescription Alternatives, by Earl Mindell, R.Ph., Ph.D. Also of great importance is Dr. James S. Gordon's Center for Mind-Body Medicine training program called "Food as Medicine." It is changing how nutrition is being taught in medical schools.

MYTH: Intestinal cleansing is unnecessary and dangerous.

FACT: Maintaining a great digestive system through thoughtful nutrition, plenty of exercise, plenty of water, and a peaceful mind is highly desirable but the millions spent on antacids and laxatives shows that is not the way of the average person! The great Naturopaths of the last two centuries have demonstrated that keeping the ‘inner house’ clean from parasites and sludge improves every system in the body. In fact, the digestive system is the most important system to maintain because it is the foundation of good health. Colonics (washing the colon out with water) are one way to cleanse the 8 feet of large intestine, the colon, but are not useful for the 20 feet of small intestine, the primary site of nutrient absorption. This portion requires assistance from an herbal/food program such as our Detox Kits, which are effective with or without colonics for removing the sludge build up on the intestinal walls. If you do opt for colonics be sure to replace the beneficial bacteria that get washed out. MYTH: 1200mg of calcium are necessary to create strong teeth and bones.

FACT: First, all calciums are not alike and these mega doses are being prescribed because the absorption rate is so low. The current, preferred type is calcium citrate, but this is not true calcium. Any mineral that ends in 'ate' is an inorganic, non water-soluble compound that is poorly absorbed (7-30%). That leaves 70+% available for possibly painful and dangerous calcification in our soft tissues including our arteries! Second, magnesium must be taken in an absorbable form along with calcium. Low magnesium in the body will cause calcium to leave the bones and go to the soft tissues. Other signs of low magnesium are depression, cramping, PMS, migraines, asthma, and more. MYTH: Large doses of vitamin C are required for health.
